Do you ever judge people based on their looks?

I was watching an episode of BraveHeart View recently and this was the topic being discussed.

Ellie Drake, the founder of Brave Heart Women, talked about how painful it was for her when she arrived in America (from Iran) and was judged because she had one eyebrow.  All the women including Ellie had a laugh about it but I can imagine the pain of that experience lasting a long time. For some of us it may be traumatic enough to even last a life time.

We need to be careful about stereotyping people based on their differentness from us. Sometimes it’s their skin color, ability and age. Things aren’t always what they appear to be. People aren’t always who they seem.

Do you remember how Susan Boyle was treated when she first auditioned on “Britain’s Got Talent”? I remember people made the assumption that she couldn’t sing because she didn’t seem to fit the stereotype of what singers look and dress like as in younger, thinner… Many people took one look at her, sized her up and wrote her off thinking that she was really going to make a fool of herself on stage.

And then she opened her mouth singing “I dreamed a dream” and she immediately shut down the naysayers and won the hearts of millions around the world.  I was happy for her from the very beginning because I love to root for the underdog. But that doesn’t mean I’m not critical of others. I’m working on not judging.

How can we move past this issue that robs us of treating people with respect without them having to prove themselves?

-         Look beyond the outer package: weight, skin color, clothes, ability, gender, sexual orientation etc.

-          Remember how painful it is or was for you when you are/were judged and show understanding.

-         Accept that underneath it all is a person who needs acceptance just like you.

-         Refuse to participate in conversations that bash people and cut them down.

-         Recognize that when you speak badly of others it reflects badly on you.

Turning The Judge And Other Court Decision Makers In Your Favor In Divorce Court

Most people assume that the judge is the only person that has the authority to make any final decisions in the court room.  But this is definitely not the case–there are a number of different decision makers in divorce court that need to be considered when fighting for your father’s rights in divorce court.  Just because the judge has the final say doesn’t mean that you can’t sway the other decision makers in the case to assist you in getting the response from the judge that you truly want in the end.

When you’re dealing with divorce court, you’re typically dealing with numerous decision makers.  It’s not just about what you and your ex-wife want, it’s generally all about what’s best for everyone, including the children.  If a father wants joint custody, the court will generally not deny the father of 50/50 visitation time if the mother will come to an agreement on the terms.  This is because courts do truly understand the importance of having both parents in a kids life.  But there are certain key players in the courtroom that could help you prove your ability to gain custody–even full!  This means being on the good side of family counselors, property appraisers, evaluators, and other decision makers that present important, influential information to the judge in regards to the case.

Knowing who can influence the judge is an important tactic in gaining custody of your children and protecting your rights as a father.  A family counselor can be on your side, by agreeing that it is important for a child to have their father in their lives.  A marriage counselor could assist by reporting to the judge that your wife could easily be diagnosed for anger issues, or that she is overly emotional in front of the children.  This could help turn the case in your favor as well.  Know the key players, and utilize them properly to help influence the judge to see YOUR side of the story.

Behold the Judge is Standing at the Door (James 5:9)

It is sometimes hard for Christians to grasp emotionally that they will be judged by Christ on the Day of Judgment.  So much has been made of the grace of God and God’s love that it is hard to come to grips with the idea of judgment but James in writing to Christians says, “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned.  Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9 NKJV)  That ought to be a sobering thought to all who seriously contemplate it.

“We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.  For it is written:  ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’  So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.” (Rom. 14:10-12 NKJV)  If the Bible is true, and I say that without a doubt in my mind, then every person who has ever lived, or will live in the future, or who lives now, will someday be found on their knees at the feet of God (Jesus) the creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is.  I cannot imagine the terror of one who is forced into that situation knowing he/she had lived a life of rebellion against God.  Terror is too mild a word for that experience.

Can a man fight against God and hope to win?  If not should we not all give consideration to the life we ought to be living?  We have today.  We ought to make use of it for “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Cor. 6:2 NKJV)  Today is the day God will accept us if we will accept him by faith and obedience to the gospel.  But as life has well taught us today is here and gone tomorrow.  Yes, of course, today is as long as our life lasts but we have all been to the cemetery too many times to fool ourselves into thinking that today will last indefinitely.  Our last day on earth shall arrive gradually with expectation or surprise us as of a bolt of lightning out of the blue but when that day does arrive, as it will, then we pass from today into tomorrow and into too late – too late to obey the gospel and live life eternally with God in heaven.

If I could beg you to obey the gospel and it would do any good I would do it but that is not how it works for obeying the gospel to please me would do you no good.  Gospel obedience must be from the heart sincere in its desire to please God not man.  As Paul wrote to the Romans and said to them “you obeyed from the heart” (Rom. 6:17 NKJV) so it must be.  In Christianity it is folly to think of using force of any kind to convert people.  In the Muslim religion that might work but not in the faith God requires as found in the Bible.

Where does a man run to in order to get away from God?  “Where can I go from your Spirit?  Or where can I flee from your presence?  If I ascend into heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there.” (Psalms 139:7-8 NKJV)  Jonah tried running away from God but did not get far.  I guess one could say though that he got far enough away to realize he could not flee.  It is hard for me to understand how people with advanced degrees, great innate intelligence, think they can escape from God but it is as common with them as it is with the everyday man or woman.  Who can understand it?  Yes, we can run from God but we cannot hide from him.

When the Lord returns in judgment he “will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts” (1 Cor. 4:5 NKJV) for “he knows the secrets of the heart.” (Psalms 44:21 NKJV)  Yes, he knows your evil thoughts (Matt. 9:4) and we will be judged for evil thoughts for they are listed in a list of sins as found in Matt. 15:18-19.  “God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.” (Rom. 2:16 NKJV)  “All things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Heb. 4:13 NKJV)

What I have written so far I have written both to the saint (the Christian) and to the sinner (the one who has never obeyed the gospel).  But, I want to direct my words now to those who are Christians or who believe they are but are smug in the idea that there is no need to be overly concerned about their salvation just kind of taking it for granted.  Be forewarned, “The Lord will judge his people.” (Heb. 10:30 NKJV)  When you read that passage in context it is clearly speaking to the Christian.  “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.” (Heb. 10:26 NKJV)  Who is the “we” being spoken to, who has received the knowledge of the truth – the Christian.  The verse just prior to that one speaks of those who are guilty of “forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” (Heb. 10:25 NKJV)  The writer closes this section of his writing by saying, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Heb. 10:31 NKJV)

In 1 Corinthians 10 Paul begins by talking about the journey out of Egypt to the Promised Land.  He speaks of some of the sins God’s people fell into during that period of time and of the consequences to them saying, “with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.” (1 Cor. 10:5 NKJV)  Then after recounting a number of those sins he says, “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” (1 Cor. 10:11-12 NKJV)  Who is Paul writing to?  Is it to a people who are not yet Christians?  Not at all!  The book of 1 Corinthians is addressed “to the church of God which is at Corinth.” (1 Cor. 1:2 NKJV)

Yes, salvation is free in that we do not earn it nor do we deserve it but neither can we take it for granted or be indifferent toward it.  The Hebrew writer makes this clear when he speaks of “a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.  Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (Heb. 10:27-29 NKJV)

In the letter that was to be delivered to “the angel of the church in Thyatira” (Rev. 2:18 NKJV) Jesus said, “I am he who searches the minds and hearts.  And I will give to each one of you according to your works.” (Rev. 2:23 NKJV)  Yes, the message is to Christians and I could not help but be reminded as I read this passage, reminded again of what I have heard over and over again, that works do not matter, it is all grace.  Jesus did not teach that.

God, “‘will render to each one according to his deeds’:  eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil.” (Rom. 2:6-9 NKJV)  Jesus is “the author of eternal salvation to all who obey him.” (Heb. 5:9 NKJV)  It is certain no man can be saved without the grace of God but to imply the Christian has no obligations to meet for salvation, God’s grace will just cover it all, is a perversion of the truth.

Matt. 7:22-23 ought to be an eye opener to all who will give it serious consideration.  Jesus says, “Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (NKJV)  He is speaking, of course, of the Day of Judgment.  Here is a group of men who had some religion about them.  Were they lying to Jesus about the things they had done?  I cannot conceive of a man who would be that big a fool at the Day of Judgment to lie to Jesus knowing what was at stake and knowing with whom he was dealing.  I thus take them at their word as did the commentators I consulted on this passage.  Furthermore, Jesus does not take them to task for lying to him.

So, what is the point?  Simply this – a man may claim to be on the Lord’s side, he may do things that appear to be good and positive and they may actually be that up to a degree and yet the bottom line is despite appearances, despite one’s own I am satisfied with my religion, the man is lost.  Yes, a regular church go’er, a religious man, who is lost.  Why is he lost?  Because he practiced lawlessness.  What is lawlessness?  “Sin is lawlessness.” (1 John 3:4 NKJV)  Now note the text in Matthew says nothing about whether or not this sin was deliberate or not.  Sin does not have to be deliberate to be sin.  Many who crucified Christ or were in favor of it did it in ignorance, Peter says so in Acts 3:17, but it was nevertheless sin as was Paul’s later persecution of Christians before his own conversion.

Who will be saved on the Day of Judgment?  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my father in heaven.” (Matt. 7:21 NKJV)  Note this is the verse just prior to Matt. 7:22-23 quoted just above, just before Jesus’ denying entry into heaven of those who had done many good works in his name but who practiced lawlessness.

It is time to give this line of thought a practical application to our own time.  There are hundreds and hundreds of denominations today each teaching a different doctrine or doctrines.  I would as soon believe that two plus three equals four as does three plus five as well as two plus two as to believe that one can be saved in just any church of your choice.  It is just as logical to believe one as it is the other.  Everyone cannot be teaching truth while contradicting one another.  Now honest, how smart do you have to be to figure that out?  Am I a brain surgeon?  Yet, we hear it said all the time we are all going to the same place, choose the church of your choice, and other such nonsense.  There are not thousands of different truths out there.  Jesus said, “You shall know the truth.” (John 8:32 NKJV)  Get that, “the truth,” one truth, not one thousand truths.

If we approached our secular educations the way we approach Bible study there would be no graduates, no degrees handed out.  Our instructors would rebuke us and rightly so for our lack of common sense and reasoning and for letting our emotions run wild overwhelming our ability to think rationally.  We are ruled by our traditions and emotions just as much as the Pharisees and until we get over that we will like them find truth hard to come by all the while convinced in heart and mind we have it.

The bottom line is every person ought to be reevaluating their life in light of what the scriptures say, not what their church says.  Who cares about “their church” at the Day of Judgment?  In the first place you do not have a church in any scriptural sense for the church belongs to Christ, not to you or me.  In the second place we are not saved collectively but individually.  The vast majority ought to be getting out of what they call “their church” right away anyway for if we would reason correctly and study the scriptures with the reason and logic we do textbooks we would soon see the error in the one we hold allegiance to and begin to search wholeheartedly for a congregation that taught and practiced the truth.

One advantage to getting older is that you are no longer concerned about what people think about you.  You are reaching the point where reality (death) is beginning to stare you in the face and you can truly say, “I will not fear.  What can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:6 NKJV)  Not to offend anyone deliberately but when you start getting older you have bigger fish to fry than what people think of you or will say about you.  Where you are headed they are not going, at least not so soon, but you can see clearly you are.  Truth ought to become utmost in our desires at that point in time.  In fact, it ought to be that way all through life but often it is not.

Yes, “the Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9 NKJV)  He is expecting you.  He “was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.” (Acts 10:42 NKJV)  The day is appointed (Acts 17:31).  Christ will be there.  You will kneel and confess that Jesus is Lord and answer for your life.  Are you ready?  If not what are you going to do about it?  Surely you are not going to fritter away the time you have are you?

Getting The Divorce Court Judge On Your Side During Pro Se Litigation

The courtroom can be a nerve-racking, anxiety-ridden place for anyone who has never dealt with the law before.  A cold, desolate room with echoing noises, tense opposing parties and a judge in which everything lies upon.  This situation can make even the most confident person crack under pressure, but no matter how intimidated you feel, it is important to get on your judge’s good side in order to have some parts of your case to your advantage.

Submit clean paperwork.  Make sure you understand the formatting required in your state and county courts in order to impress the judge that you have done your research and did not sloppily put together your legal documents without care and respect for the court systems.

Stay on task.  Don’t miss deadlines and court dates.  This can cause a judge to become frustrated and harbor a negative feeling against you for abusing the court system’s time and energy.

Show a true, faithful effort.  Show the judge that even though you are going about this Pro Se, that you’ve done your homework, researched the case and have the legal information to back up your claims and defenses.

Know your judge.  I’m not talking about Googling your judge online, but I am talking about sitting in on a few cases that he is presiding over.  This way, you can get a feel for what he likes, doesn’t like, tolerates or hates, and this can give you an edge over your ex-wife when you finally take your own case to court.

Remember that the judge is the one that has the final say about your case and what you are proposing happens during your time in court for your divorce.  By getting on the judge’s good side, you will better your chances of being heard and recognized during the proceedings, and in the long run, that is a great benefit to have over your opposing party!

America’s Next Top Model: New Judge for Cycle 10

America’s Next Top Model seems to sift through judges from cycle to cycle, with new judges coming in every cycle. In 2003, Tyra Banks had judges Janice Dickinson, Beau Quillian, and Kimora Lee Simmons. But then, Dickinson and Simmons seemed to not like each other very much, thus Simmons left the show after a season. Quillian followed shortly. Eric Nicholson was then recruited into the gang, but his stay was short, as Tyra finally found the perfect combination of people to make up her panel of judges. Since cycle 5, Tyra has teamed up with her new panel of judges, which includes Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and Twiggy. However, it seems that the group is about to get remixed as one judge leaves and another will take the place.

The CW announced today that Twiggy won’t be back for cycle 10 of America ‘s Next Top Model, citing scheduling conflicts as the main reason behind it all. Being there since cycle 5, Twiggy will be ending her involvement with the reality series soon.

Replacing Twiggy as a judge on America ‘s Next Top Model is former supermodel Paulina Porizkova, who was twice named as one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People. Her other magazine appearances include Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour. She has also appeared in several movies and is a published author. She recently competed in Dancing with the Stars, where she and her partner, Alex Mazo were the first to be eliminated.

Porizkova now returns to reality television as a judge on America ‘s Next Top Model, where she will dish out her fashion expertise. Executive Producer of America’s Next Top Model Ken Mok said of her joining the series, “We are thrilled to have Paulina as a part of this cycle’s judging panel. The show and participants will benefit a great deal from her vast modeling knowledge and expertise.”

Many of Paula Abdul fans feel that American idol would not be the same without her and there are people who threaten to stop watching the show. However as one of America’s funniest entertainer, there are some American Idol fans who believe that her quick wit and vast entertainment experience could bring a new life to the show.

According to Randy Jackson in a interview with MTV, Ellen DeGeneres passion for music and as an avid American Idol fan, makes her an ideal judge. He said “”She’ll give that layperson-at-home view. … She will give the at-home viewer a real voice to be on the judges’ panel.”

As the show season starts, the American public will be watching and perhaps judging the performances of Ellen DeGeneres as a judge. One thing we can be sure of is, there will be more laughter during the show.

5 Ways To Endear Yourself To Your Divorce Judge

Copyright (c) 2009 Lucille Uttermohlen

If you want to avoid annoying your divorce judge, these tips will help. I can’t guarantee that he / she will be in a good mood if you follow this advice. His / her attitude will depend on a number of factors none of us can control, like whether or not your particular jurist is constipated. These tips will give you a leg up, though, and so they are worth heeding.

1. Make sure you get to court on time. The judge may be late, at lunch, or drinking coffee in his / her office. There may be another hearing in progress when you arrive at the courthouse. Still, you better get there when the hearing is scheduled. If the judge is ready to go, he / she won’t be real happy to find that you aren’t there.

2. Make sure you are dressed for court. It shouldn’t make any difference. What you say shouldn’t be judged by what you happen to be wearing. However, if you show up after slopping your hogs or running a marathon, the judge won’t be too impressed. If you and your clothes are neat and clean, you are showing that you respect the judge, and that you take your own case seriously. If you look or smell funny, it will make your testimony look less credible. Believe me, you want the judge to trust what you are saying.

3. Keep your cool. The judge isn’t personally involved with you and your case. You may think your ex deserves the finger, or a cussing out, and maybe he / she does. However, the judge doesn’t know him / her, and is likely to think you should treat him / her, and anyone else with courtesy and respect.

4. Make sure people who come to court with you realize that they won’t help you by jeering and grumbling at the other side. Yes, it is possible that your ex will lie through his / her teeth. It is even possible for his / her witnesses to give testimony that is more interesting than factual. However, hissing and booing should be saved for sporting events. No judge feels that his / her courtroom is the proper place for the expression of popular opinion, no matter how tempting a choice editorial comment may seem at the time. It just won’t help your case, and can detract from your believability.

5. Answer the questions you are asked. Don’t add information you think may be more interesting to the judge. If your attorney doesn’t ask you something you think is important, he / she may have a good reason for not bringing it up. When you spend enough time in front of a particular judge, you get a pretty good idea what he / she doesn’t like to hear. If you think something important has been omitted, mention it when you get back to your table. If you are really concerned, ask the judge if you can talk to your lawyer before you continue.

Getting a divorce can be traumatic. It may be tempting to think that anyone in his / her right mind will agree with you as to what would be fair in your case. However, a judge will listen to both of you, and decide who is telling the truth after all the evidence is in. Human beings being what they are, it is easy to steer your judge away from what you are trying to prove if he / she finds your attitude rude or obnoxious. This is why you will do well to act as if you are the most dignified and intelligent person the judge has ever heard, rather than the typical angry respondent in a divorce case.
