Judges Nursing Almighty Hangover From the Great American Beer Festival
This fall many beer loving Americans will have hopped on a plane to attend the biggest beer festival in the world – the Oktoberfest in Munich. Some may have chosen to stay closer to home and opted for the world’s second largest Oktoberfest at Kitchener-Waterloo in Canada. But many others, who savor American beers, will have traveled to Denver for the Great American Beer Festival.
Unlike the Oktoberfests that last up to 16 days, the Great American Beer Festival is held over a mere three days, starting on Thursday, finishing on Saturday and featuring only home-brewed, domestic beers. Held for the 26th time during mid-October 2007 the beer festival drew over 40,000 beer lovers to Denver in the heart of the Rockies.
At this year’s festival more than 100 professional judges were required to work their way through 2,793 different beers submitted for judging by 473 different breweries; quite a staggering task! After the judging process they awarded 222 medals across 75 categories. Tough work, getting through so many beers in so little time but they managed it and all in good time! It’s very difficult to win one of the coveted Great American Brewing festival medals with only 8% of the total number of entrants eventually leaving the festival with one, meaning that it is a great selling point for the winning beers, being able to display a representation of a winning medal on their label.
There are many different categories judged at the festival with the fastest growing being the Fruit and Vegetable Beers which saw the number of entries leap from 46 in 2006 to a staggering 94 this year. Wood-barrel-aged beer saw a 24% increase in the number of entrants and even Gluten-free beer was judged this year recording a respectable eight entries, although festival organisers expect that number to increase substantially at next year’s event.
Each visitor to the festival gets to sample as many of the 2,793 beers as they can manage, drinking one ounce samples from the festival’s breweries. Arranged throughout the exhibition hall by regions, the breweries at the festival offer visitors a walking beer tour of the USA.
This year’s festival was the biggest yet, and next year organisers are planning on making it even bigger. So, be prepared if you are thinking of visiting the Rockies in mid-October 2008 as finding a hotel in Denver that isn’t full of beer lovers will be a real challenge!

American Idol Judges
Season nine of American Idol has been going strong since the first weeks of production. The judges have narrowed down the thousands of contestants who auditioned for a spot in Hollywood. The show is now getting to the top twenty five performers. The judges have narrowed down and deliberated about the best of the best to present to the audience these top singers. The audience votes on their favorite singer to try to get them passed to the next round of competition. The judges are harsher in their evaluation and give critique and praise to contestant’s performance of the night. The judges can sway or influence how the audience will vote. Here is a look at who the American Idol judges are this season.
Simon Cowell has been with American Idol since day one. He is one of the most well known judges yet he is liked the least because of his brutal honesty and temperament. However, the man knows what he is doing and is a leader in the entertainment industry. He produces music competition shows in both the U.S. and the U.K. Simon has been in the industry for more than twenty years and has worked as an executive at Sony Records. His ear for talent has made him a pioneer in the pop industry as he has shaped and molded some of the top pop artists of our time.
Kara DioGuardi is highly qualified to a judge on the show. She is a seasoned veteran in the music industry and has her own personal success. She is a songwriter that has produced hits for top recording artists all over the world. She is part owner of Arthouse Entertainment, and it is a very successful lucrative business. She is one of the highest demanded songwriters in the industry. She has written songs that have made an artist’s career skyrocket to stardom, and her songs also appear in movies, television shows, commercials, and all over the world. She has even written award winning songs for Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. You have probably heard Kara’s songs on the Internet radio, a movie, or a traditional radio station being sung by famous singers.
A judge that everyone loves and who has also been there since day one is Randy Jackson. He is also a powerhouse in the music industry. Like Simon, he has also been in the industry for twenty years. He not only produces music, but he plays music as well. He toured with the band Journey and played bass guitar. He has been a vice president and major recording labels and has toured, produced, and worked with some of the best in the industry including Madonna. He helps the contestants of American Idol become stars and his critiques are invaluable. He not only performs in the industry, but he has shaped and produced some of the best performers and has contributed to albums that have sold millions worldwide.
The newest judge who replaced Paula Abdul is Ellen DeGeneres. Unlike the other judges, Ellen isn’t a veteran in the music industry. However, she does know a thing or two about stage presence and performance because she is an actress, comedian, and the host of an award winning talk show. Her critiques and perspective on the show offer some new light and a different perspective to the contestants and audience. She is a star in her own right as she has been a leader in the entertainment industry for acting.

Many of Paula Abdul fans feel that American idol would not be the same without her and there are people who threaten to stop watching the show. However as one of America’s funniest entertainer, there are some American Idol fans who believe that her quick wit and vast entertainment experience could bring a new life to the show.
According to Randy Jackson in a interview with MTV, Ellen DeGeneres passion for music and as an avid American Idol fan, makes her an ideal judge. He said “”She’ll give that layperson-at-home view. … She will give the at-home viewer a real voice to be on the judges’ panel.”
As the show season starts, the American public will be watching and perhaps judging the performances of Ellen DeGeneres as a judge. One thing we can be sure of is, there will be more laughter during the show.

Dolly Parton Declines to be American Idol Judge While Season 5′s Mandisa Tops Album Charts
Dolly Parton and American Idol fans are disappointed to hear that the country singer popularly known for her bumpers–err, “Jolene” hit back in the 1974 has declined an offer to become a judge on the reality singing competition.
The now 61-year-old Dolly Parton, who was born and raised in Sevierville, Tennessee, started performing at a young age and later on went to record various albums under different record labels. Some of her hits never made it into the Billboard Top 100, but her single “Jolene,” which was produced by Bon Ferguson, became a hit when it was released in 1974.
For its upcoming season, American Idol planned to produce an episode which was entirely devoted to the legendary country singer. FOX had invited her along to be a judge for the episode, however, she turned down the offer because she believed she was too nice to critique some wannabes from America’s most popular singing competition.
“I won’t be a judge. I couldn’t do that. I can’t tell people they aren’t doing a good job even if they ask me,” Dolly Parton said. “To tell someone if they’re good or bad, or if they suck isn’t me.”
Instead of serving as a judge on the Dolly Parton tribute episode, however, the country singer instead agreed to work with the contenders backstage by giving them tips and teaching them her songs.
In other American Idol news, Mandisa Hundley of season 5 celebrates her birthday tomorrow, October 2, and what more could she ask for as she blows her birthday candle when she’s topped the Christian albums charts with her first album, True Beauty. Aside from her singing career, Hundley had also written her first book entitled Idol Eyes, after her stint on the reality singing competition. Released in May 2007, Idol Eyes by Mandisa Hundley chronicles her struggles with low self-esteem and food addiction.

American Idol Judge Penetrates the Drama World
With all the controversy in his life, American Idol’s Simon Cowell brings into play all the drama to create a new television show for British TV. And after a string of endeavors in the music industry, it appears that he is now invading the television world bit by bit.
Starting off in 2001 with Pop Idol, Cowell became a judge on its first season. Subsequently, he also became a judge on the reality talent show American Idol where his infamy as a nasty and straightforward judge grew. A couple of years later, he once again became a judge on the British talent show The X Factor. Eventually, his knowledge and flair in the entertainment scene brought him behind the scenes as he produced America’s Got Talent and Celebrity Duets.
His newest drama project comes in the form of Rock Rivals, a fictional peek behind the scenes of a television talent show, which centers on the lives of two celebrity judges on The X Factor while their marriage falls apart.
Having a “War of the Roses” kind of dispute, the show attempts to give the viewers a one of a kind entertainment experience. The program is scheduled to shoot over the summer and will be aired on ITV in fall. Sally Haynes, deputy controller of ITV, said, “The ongoing appeal for this type of talent show presents a ripe opportunity for a modern fun drama that transports us backstage into the heady and fabulous extremes of the music business.”
Unlike American Idol, Cowell would be working as a producer of the said show with Shed Productions. Being his first dramatic venture on television, Cowell is gleaming with enthusiasm. He said, “I am very excited about this show, the idea is brilliant and Shed Productions have a proven track record of making these type of shows very popular.”
Of course, with this type of undertaking, spectators can’t help but dwell on the possibility that this might entail commissioning in the Unites States in the near future, just like American Idol.

American Idol?s Notorious Judge Supports Peta
PETA, an International non-profit group that promotes animal protection and contests animal abuse, has found its new endorser in the form of American Idol judge Simon Cowell. The infamous judge will be promoting a public service awareness campaign that deals with animal welfare, specifically pertaining to the cruelty of leaving dogs in a vehicle on a hot day.
Cowell strongly asserts his sentiments over the subject matter he previously experienced firsthand. He also realized that not a lot of people are aware that leaving dogs inside a car might cause danger or even kill the animal. And while this is just one crusade, he explores other animal issues, which need to be addressed such as the fur trade with dogs.
Cowell, a 47-year old British artist, is an executive for Sony BMG. Apart from being a judge on American Idol, he is responsible for music themes of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Zig and Zag, and the World Wrestling Federation. Previously, he was also a judge on Pop Idol, The X Factor, and Britain’s Got Talent
This endorsement of Cowell surprises most people, especially avid fans of the reality talent show American Idol where he depicts a stern and rough judge, often uttering straightforward and harsh remarks in auditions and during the show. He maintains that treating people is very different with treating animals. He also attributes his good karma on his behavior towards animals. Cowell said, “Everyone should love animals. If you’re good to animals, your life will be good. And my life is good because I’ve been good to animals. If I see a baby, it’s a baby. If I see a puppy, it’s a whole different ball game. He also emphasized on the importance of loving animals on American Idol. He added, “The people I work with, they’re all animal lovers. It’s part of the criteria for judging the show: you’ve got to like animals.”
